Oddly enough, pain is a mystery to the medical profession. Our medical system is still in the middle ages in terms of understanding pain, which is why we have over 65,000 people a year dying of opiate overdose in the US. Pain is assumed by the medical establishment to always be a product of injury or disease, but this is just plain wrong.
I’m a trigger point therapist, and it has been demonstrated in repeated studies as well as my own 15 years of clinical experience that the vast majority of pain is from muscles that have developed trigger points.
I developed my own system by combining techniques from Thai massage and other modalities with trigger point therapy and modern neuroscience. It really works, and now my mission is to teach others this revolutionary approach.
Trigger Points: Extremely Common And Easily Addressed
Trigger points, which are actually responsible for most pain, are small areas of stagnation in muscle tissue that develop in response to chronic or acute stresses on muscles. Trigger point ideas are very powerful - but unfortunately, most students are taught trigger points in a way that is not very useful - or they don't learn it at all. I call my system Trigger Point 2.0 because I teach it very differently than you might have learned in massage school.
Trigger points aren’t injuries – but they commonly send pain to other areas (pain referral) in a way that can be confusing and feel very much like an injury. This fools everyone – doctors, PTs, most practitioners.
While the pain can be severe, trigger points are fairly easy to correct. The techniques aren't difficult – what's important is knowing what muscles to treat and in what order. Our system combines the insights of modern neuroscience with a new take on trigger point therapy - and some extremely effective techniques and tools for putting these ideas into practice.
Example: "Trochanteric Bursitis"
If a client goes to the doctor with localized pain on the side of their hip, the doctor is very likely to tell them that they have "trochanteric bursitis". Meaning that a sac over a bone in their hip became inflamed for some unknown reason. Somehow, their body just broke.
It seems obvious and tempting to blame the problem on the structures and "injuries" near the site of the pain – however, this is almost never the true cause. And it's really a guess - the doctor isn't going to cut your hip open to see if the bursa is actually inflamed (and that is a good thing).
Pain for the most part comes from muscles. Trochanteric bursitis is often what Travell and Simons call a "garbage diagnosis". Medical people don't generally know that this type of pain is generally referred pain from a muscle, so they by default assume disease or injury at the site of the pain.
As CTB therapists, we know that the tensor fascia latae (TFL) muscle refers pain exactly to that area, and is generally what causes this pain. It's a muscle that tends to get overloaded during activities like walking when people have certain disturbed gait patterns.
We show you how to thoroughly treat the TFL in this course along with many other muscles that cause pain in this area. Like most muscles, the actual treatment isn't difficult. But you do need to understand how to treat each muscle as well as how to set yourself up properly to move the leg, which can be heavy. And most importantly, you have to understand the neurological "tricks" that will allow the muscle to give up its holding pattern.
Individual muscles are fairly easy to treat. The thing is, it’s very rarely about a single muscle. This is a core mistake that most therapists who know "a little trigger point therapy" make – they don't treat the related muscles that keep the TFL in dysfunction. For example, in this case adductor magnus is a key antagonist but very few therapists know they need to treat it in conjunction.
We understand these relationships and have incorporated them – along with our decades of clinical experience – into what we call our Sciatica and Hip Pain Core Protocol.
